When riding in a group, placing yourself in a staggered formation is safest as it makes you more visible and keeps the group together. Correct spacing is as follows: Below image shows lead rider on green bike. With each rider allowing a 1 second gap between themselves and the staggered bike infront of them, that will put a 2 second gap between bikes that are directly infront of each other. When staggered in this formation, cagers won't find any tempting slots to slide into. Nothing breaks up a nicely moving group ride than a big ol' gap that just invites cars into it. "A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed."
